Photograph
marked: "Miami & Erie Canal New Bremen, Ohio" was
most likely taken from the then Voglesang Street "Swing" Bridge.
The canal boats would nudge the bridge and it would swing open
to let them through. A bridge tender would then close the bridge.
In the progression of time the street was renamed West plum Street
and the "swing" bridge has passed into history.
The
building in the background was used for storing the farmers' grain
until it could be shipped via the canal boats to its destination.
It was located on the east side of the canal approximately mid
way between what is now West Plum Street and West Front Street.
