On Monday, Feb. 9, 2015, New Bremen Village Council adopted Resolution 2015 – 2 – 6 which Declares the Necessity that certain sidewalks, curbs and gutters and driveway approaches be reconstructed on First Street east of State Route 66 and Washington Street south of First Street. It is the first step of several that are required to reconstruct a street.
On Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2015, at 5:00 pm, there will be a Public Hearing at the Lockkeepers House, 22 S. Water Street – top floor - about the planned reconstruction of Washington Street between SR 66 and First Street and First Street between SR 66 and Jefferson Street with an alternate to reconstruct First Street east of Jefferson Street. The construction plans and engineering issues will be reviewed. The estimated assessments for your property are attached. As on other recent street reconstruction projects, the only sidewalks that would be replaced are the ones that must be replaced because of their condition or engineering reasons or are totally missing. If you would like to have all new sidewalks, that is your option but it involves extra cost to the property owner. Credit will be given for the remaining useful life of existing sidewalks that must be replaced and is noted on the estimate if there is any.
The decision whether to proceed with the Reconstruction of First Street east of Jefferson Street will be based upon the actual bids that are received and a judgment made by Village Council as to its importance vs. cost and its affordability.
Village Council will be meeting after the Feb. 24 Public Hearing and based upon comments received about the proposed project may choose to proceed with the project. If Council authorizes the project to proceed, bids would be opened in March or April for construction to take place during the summer, while the ABC Center is closed.
It would be late fall 2015, at the earliest, before any assessments could be due. For those that have the assessment put on their property taxes, it would be Feb. 2016 at the earliest before the first installment would be due.
Please make your comments known at the Public Hearing on Feb. 24 or at the Village Offices during business hours. Written comments are fine.
