Before choosing a tree for planting, know what you want from the tree. Do you want the cooling affect from the tree during the hot season, or do you want the tree for some other reason?
Locating a tree in the home landscaping plan should be done before the tree is selected. Some suggestions for tall tree placement are as follows:
- Place tall trees to the side or the rear of the house so they from a frame as the house in viewed from the front. This can add curb appeal to the house.
- Keep tall trees away from power or utility lines and away from foundations of your house.
- Keep tall trees away from underground sewer lines, gas lines, and utility lines or walk ways and driveways. Remember that the tree roots can spread out as far as the branches of a mature tree.
If you want to plant a smaller tree, here are some things to keep in mind:
- There are many small trees that can be used for side foundation plantings.
- Your house can appear to be longer with a small tree placed on either end of your home.
- Some small trees also have good spring or fall colors that can compliment your house and landscaping.
Not only do trees add beauty to your home and neighborhood, they can add value. Planting trees as part of your landscaping plan can add between 15 and 20% to your property value.
