07/22/2010 Approximately 200 people gathered at the Crown Pavilion on Saturday, June 19th for the dedication ceremony of the Miami and Erie Canal Visitors Center.
Once the home of those who tended Lock One North in New Bremen, and still referred to locally as the Lockkeepers House, the visitors center will now be home to the Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce, serve as a welcome center for visitors and a museum for canal era artifacts.
In addition to local officials, others who spoke at the dedication included State Senator Keith Faber. John Hunter of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and Scott Frey, Executive Director of the Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce. Neal Brady, Director of the Miami and Erie Canal Corridor Association spoke to those in attendance about the history of the canal in the growth and development of the area. New Bremen Mayor Jeff Pape said that the visitors center is a vital asset to the community.
Murals, and exhibits about the canal and local history, will allow visitors the opportunity to learn about the Miami and Erie Canal and the role it played in the development of New Bremen, surrounding communities and Ohio.
Construction of the visitors center was funded with $160,000 Transportation Enhancement Grant from the Ohio Department of Transportation and matching funds of $20,000 from the Historic Association will be open Monday-Friday, 9:00 am - 11:00 am and 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm.
